Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah suffered heartbreak on Tuesday evening as his country, Egypt, failed to secure their spot at Qatar 2022.
Egypt were taking on Senegal in the second of two World Cup qualifying matches.
The first leg would take place in Egypt last week and saw the home outfit come away with a 1-0 win on the day.
The second leg would then be played out at the Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade on Tuesday evening in Senegal.
The home side took the lead in the game after just four minutes thanks to an own goal from Egypt’s Hamdi Fathi.
Neither outfit was then able to find the second goal on the day, meaning the clash was decided by penalties.
This would be a repeat of the 2022 African Cup of Nations final and, just like that game, it was Senegal who came out on top.
The Senegal victory in the shootout was very much tainted, however.
The reason for this was that every time an Egypt player stepped up to take a spot-kick, the Senegal fans in the stadium pointed an abundance of laser pens at the players.
Though it cannot be known for sure how much this affected the players, it is unlikely to be a coincidence that three of the four Egypt players who stepped up from 12 yards, including Mo Salah, missed their penalties.
