Barcelona chief drops Erling Haaland hint ahead of summer

Barcelona president Joan Laporta was, on Friday, drawn on the possibility of the club mounting a summer assault for Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland.

Hitman Haaland, of course, is widely expected to seal a departure from Signal Iduna Park ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

This comes owing to a cut-price release clause in the Norwegian’s contract, understood to come in around the 75 million euro mark.

A whole host of European football’s biggest clubs, in turn, are expected to express a keen interest in his signature, in a bid to land a player who could well go on to define the post-Messi/Ronaldo generation of football.

The likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid have all been tipped as potential landing spots in the media, with the aforementioned Barcelona, owing to the club’s financial troubles, long labelled little more than an afterthought in the Haaland sweepstakes.

As alluded to above, though, if the latest comments on the part of the club’s president are anything to go by, then perhaps the Blaugrana cannot yet be quite ruled out when it comes to the race for one of world football’s most in-demand players.

Speaking to the media at an event on Friday evening, Joan Laporta was drawn on the chances of Haaland landing in the Catalan capital ahead of next season.

And the Spaniard point blank refused to rule out such a possibility, confirming Barca’s intent to build on an impressive January window, before dropping a less than subtle smile and wink in the direction of the expectant media presence:

“We’ve done very well in the winter and the idea is to do better still in the summer”, Laporta explained. “Haaland in the summer? We hope that in the summer we can work well again and we are all satisfied with what we can achieve.”

Auba impressing

Whilst those of a Barcelona persuasion, in turn, will no doubt be hopeful of seeing Haaland pull on the club’s famed red and blue upon the 2022/23 campaign getting underway, it must be noted that the man currently tasked with finding the net under Xavi Hernandez’s watch has enjoyed quite the start to his Blaugrana career.

The player in question? Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Gabonese international Aubameyang, brought to the Camp Nou last month after calling time on his stint with Arsenal, has looked majorly impressive over the course of the last week.

After bagging a hat-trick in his new club’s drubbing of Valencia at the weekend, ‘Auba’ followed up with another goal last night, as Barca booked their spot in the Last-16 of the Europa League at the expense of Italian giants Napoli.
