West Ham identify fresh defensive target with move being ‘weighed up’ ahead of transfer deadline

Word stemming from the English media on Thursday evening suggests that West Ham United are eyeing a move for Olympique Marseille star Duje Caleta-Car.

The winter window to date has of course seen a whole host of central defenders tipped to make the move to the London Stadium.

This comes with David Moyes’ backline having been hit by a number of untimely injury concerns, most notably in the form of Angelo Ogbonna being ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

Out-of-favour Liverpool man Nat Phillips has long been viewed as the most likely candidate to take his place at the heart of West Ham’s defence over the 2nd half of the campaign, but, to this point, an agreement with the Anfield hierarchy has not been found.

In turn, the Irons transfer team have been forced to shift their attentions elsewhere.

And, as per a report from reliable outlet The Athletic on Thursday, one such option now being taken into consideration comes in the form of Marseille star Duje Caleta-Car.

It is understood that Moyes and co. are ‘weighing up’ a move for the Croatian ahead of next Monday’s transfer deadline.

This comes with Caleta-Car’s contract in France set to expire in the summer of 2023.

Bayo eyed

Turning attentions towards the other end of the pitch, West Ham are also understood to be considering a swoop for Clermont star Mohamed Bayo.

As per a report from French outlet Le10Sport, those in a position of power at the London Stadium are keen admirers of the talents boasted by hitman Bayo, with Clermont well aware that they will likely soon be forced to bid farewell to the club’s crown jewel.

A late January proposal on the part of the Hammers, in turn, cannot be ruled out.
