Royal Enfield Himalayan joins Navi Mumbai Fire Brigade

Recently, Navi Mumbai Fire Brigade had received the first batch of fire bikes manufactured by an Indian company. In this article, we will discuss how the Royal Enfield Himalayan is modified as a fire bike to operate in narrow lanes of Mumbai.

The story so far

Fire engine in narrow lane

Rapid urbanization, crowded streets, narrow lanes, ongoing and never-ending road maintenance are a nightmare for any driver who is on an emergency call. Driving thru busy traffic and all the above-mentioned situations is quite challenging for firefighters who have to drive their huge fire engines to rush to a spot that needs prompt attention.

Royal Enfield Himalayan as ‘Fire Bike’

Mumbai Fire Brigade has found a solution to this problem and introduced a fleet of hi-tech motorcycles that can travel on bad roads, go thru narrow lanes, and traffic jams. The Royal Enfield Himalayan has been modified to carry two tanks with 20-litre capacity mounted on each side, a high-pressure pump mounted on the left side of the bike, a 100 feet long hose mounted on top of the tanks. This Fire Bike is to be treated as the first source of help during a mishap until the bigger fire engines arrive.  The tank can carry 40-litre water or water mixed with foam for fire caused by oil or other chemicals that need foam to extinguish such fire.

Welcoming change

Fire Bikes

Currently, these Royal Enfield Himalayan ‘Fire Bikes ‘ are inducted at fire stations in Vashi, CBD Belapur, Airoli, Nerul, and Koparkhairane. Firefighters are been trained on how to operate and maintain such ‘Fire Bikes’. Soon other fire stations will also include ‘Fire Bike’ in their fleet of fire fighting vehicles.
