Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea’s decline in form has coincided almost exactly with Ben Chilwell’s absence after the rampaging wing-back suffered an ACL injury.

It is not just his injury that has hampered the Blues, with midfield crises and COVID-19 outbreaks preventing Tuchel from naming a full 18-man-squad to face Wolves 10 days ago, against whom he could only field 6 players on the substitutes bench.

Despite a win over Aston Villa on Boxing day, the Blues now sit 6 points off the title pace being set by Manchester City, and will need to find a way to make up the deficit.

However, they have been dealt some bad news.

Chilwell ruled out for the season

Now, in a bitter blow to Chelsea, Ben Chilwell has been ruled out for the season.

The English defender picked up an ACL injury during their Champions League win over Juventus, but was thought not to need surgery, and was even targeting a January return,

However, the club have ultimately changed their mind, and the Englishman has now been sent to have surgery, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

As per the reliable Nizaar Kinsella of Goal.com:

“Ben Chilwell is set to miss the rest of the season after Chelsea decided to end his previous rehabilitation process and send him for surgery.

It was hoped that the defender would avoid going under the knife and return in January after he injured his anterior cruciate ligament in November’s 4-0 Champions League win over Juventus.

However, the Blues feel the injury now needs surgery, with the England international now targeting a return for next season.”

This leaves Chelsea light in the full-back department ahead of a punishing schedule and a trip to the club world cup, with Marcos Alonso the only natural left back left in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
