Mikel Arteta is set to miss Arsenal’s clash with Manchester City this weekend, the club have confirmed.
Arsenal are set to face one of their toughest tests of the season this coming weekend when they take on Pep Guardiola’s men.
The Gunners are on a fine run of form, which has seen them win four on the bounce in the Premier League and climb up to 4th in the table.
However, Arsenal have not had to deal with a top team for several weeks now.
And, when they have done so earlier in the campaign, Arsenal have struggled, losing to Manchester City 5-0 in the reverse fixture back in August.
The north Londoners have also lost to Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United already this term, with Tottenham the only ‘big-six’ side they have picked up three points against in 2021/22.
Manchester City are also in superb form and currently boast the joint-best attack and best defence in the English top-flight this season.
So, even with the likes of Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe in top form, Arsenal getting anything against City seems unlikely.
And it is made even more unlikely now that Mikel Arteta will miss the game due to Covid-19.
The club released an official statement regarding the matter on Wednesday:
Mikel Arteta will miss our match against Manchester City on New Year’s Day after testing positive for COVID-19. Mikel is isolating in line with Government guidelines and we wish him well.
