Thomas Tuchel lightheartedly hints at new roles for Lukaku & Werner after Chelsea’s win over Newcastle

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel this evening joked about potential new roles for star attackers Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, on the back of his side’s meeting with Newcastle United.

James at the double

Tuchel’s men were of course back in action earlier this afternoon.

After keeping hopes of an unprecedented quadruple alive courtesy of a Carabao Cup downing of Southampton during the week, the Blues made the trip to St. James’ Park, hopeful of increasing their advantage atop the Premier League table.

And, owing to dropped points on the part of both Liverpool and Manchester City, when all was said and done on Saturday, this is precisely what Chelsea managed.

A dominant 2nd-half display eventually culminated in a 3-0 final scoreline, owing to a brace on the part of Reece James, and Jorginho’s late spot-kick.

‘Try them as wing-backs…’

In turn, with Chelsea’s last Premier League outing before today having played out into a remarkable 7-0 drubbing of Norwich City, it is safe to say that Tuchel’s side are currently firing on all cylinders.

Coincidentally (or perhaps not), this stretch of explosive form in front of goal has actually come with both of the Pensioners’ first-choice attackers on the sidelines.

Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner have spent the last couple of weeks on the treatment table in west London, owing to respective fitness problems.

In all truth, though, neither had exactly found top form yet this season, when it comes to goalscoring at least.

In turn, with the aforementioned James having today followed in the footsteps of fellow wing-back Ben Chilwell in establishing himself as a genuine goal threat, Thomas Tuchel was quick to jokingly hint at a potential change in role for Lukaku and Werner, upon their returns to fitness:

‘Maybe we need to try them (Lukaku and Werner) as wing-backs.’
