India has an extensive road network connecting almost all parts of our country. But some of these roads are in the most challenging weather conditions, especially in the northern parts of our country. The Kargil to Srinagar road is an especially important road that the government is improving. It is building the Zojila tunnel on it that will help commute here. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has fast-tracked this project so that it can finish before 2024. In today’s article, we will see why the Zojila tunnel is so important.
What is the Zojila tunnel?
The Zojila tunnel is a 14.15 km tunnel under the Zoji La pass in the Himalayas between Sonmarg and Drass in Kargil. After its completion, it will be the longest road tunnel in India and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel. The work on its project commenced in 2020. Its construction will take time due to difficult terrain and temperatures reaching minus 45-degree celsius.
Project details
The project is divided into two phases. The first part involves the development and expansion of roads between Z-morh and Zojila. This tunnel is called the Z-morh tunnel. This tunnel will also significantly reduce travel time. The second phase is building the Zojila tunnel. Along with this tunnel, there will be various bridges, snow galleries and ventilation buildings.
Why is the Zojila tunnel so important?
It is strategically important to connect Srinagar with Kargil throughout the year. Currently, the Zojila pass has to be closed for 5 to 7 months as it is covered in snow. This tunnel will also reduce the travel time by around one and a half hours. Also, the journey will be less hectic and dangerous. The project is also important to the army as the pass is close to the Line of Control (LOC) and is vulnerable to hostile actions.
