Manchester United set to miss out on Kieran Trippier but have in-house replacement

Manchester United chase Trippier

One of the stories of the summer has been Manchester United’s chase of a new right-back, with Kieran Trippier top of their list.

As far back as early June, The Sun reported that the Atletico Madrid defender was house hunting in Manchester, but nothing has come to of the deal in the months since, with the club refusing to pay the 35 million pound release clause.

However, Trippier has only started one of the first three games of the new campaign under Diego Simeone, coming off the bench for the other two fixtures. This has led to further speculation that he could be on his way out.

Bid rejected and Dalot stays

However, the latest news is that Manchester United will not be able to complete a deal for Trippier, with their last bid having come in at 21 million euros, well below the player’s release clause.

As such, the 30 year old will remain in the Spanish capital this summer, and will likely return to the Atletico first team in the coming weeks.

For Manchester United, although it represents a blow, the knock-on effect is that Diogo Dalot will remain in Manchester, despite interest from AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

Dalot will act as a backup to Wan-Bissaka, having impressed on loan with AC Milan last campaign. For Manchester United however, the Trippier pursuit ends in disappointment.
