Chelsea leaving it late in deals for Jules Koundé and Saúl Ñíguez

No movement on Jules Koundé deal

Champions League winners Chelsea are leaving it late to complete what can be classified as vital business for the club before the window closes in a matter of a few hours.

As it stands, the Blues have yet to meet Sevilla’s valuation for French center-back Jules Koundé, according to club sporting director Monchi.

It was first thought that Chelsea could secure the French internationals services in a deal that would be in the neighborhood of €60million, but now the Andalusian outfit is opting to hold out for the full amount of his release clause, which is reported to be around €75-80million. This is a major stumbling block in the final moments of the window, with Monchi not normally talked down from a position he digs into.

With the club parting ways with Kurt Zouma after his move to West Ham, Chelsea have just three trusted senior center-backs at the club in Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rüdiger, and Thiago Silva.

Chelsea still have a chance at Saúl Ñíguez

Despite the current disappointing developments around Jules Koundé dating back to yesterday, Chelsea still has a chance to add critical midfield reinforcements before the transfer window closes as they remain keen on Atlético Madrid’s Saúl Ñíguez. According to Telegraph correspondent Matt Law, both sides have not gotten up from the negotiating table and remain confident a deal can be struck.

With just N’Golo Kanté, Jorginho, and Mateo Kovačić as the only reliable midfielders on the books for Thomas Tuchel and Kanté currently sidelined with an ankle problem, a deadline day deal for the Spanish international midfielder would be a massive boon for the Blues who still are keen to offload the likes of Ross Barkley, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Lewis Baker.

The only area of the deal left to be hashed out is Atlético’s desire to receive some form of guaranteed payment; either an outright purchase this summer or an obligation to do so in the following year, which Chelsea are apparently not prepared to commit to.
