Jose Mourinho will not be best pleased that his new club Roma have failed, it seems, to bring in one of his primary targets.
Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka looked set for a move to Italy. Personal terms had been agreed and reports that a fee in the region of 18-20 million euros were published.
Granit Xhaka has agreed a five year contract with Roma.
Fee is expected to be in the region of €18-20m.
He’ll become a Roma player very soon. #AFC

However, the two clubs continued negotiating but failed to reach the magic number the Gunners were after.
It broke yesterday courtesy of The Athletic that Arsenal had decided to offer Xhaka a new contract.
Arsenal are preparing to offer Granit Xhaka a new contract this summer, which would extend the Swiss captain’s time at the club beyond the emotionally charged five years he has spent at the heart of midfield.

Could the Swiss captain really be set to sign his likely last major contract with the club he seemed so ready to leave.
Having played in the European Championships, Xhaka was granted an extended holiday to recover.
However, Xhaka has now returned to Arsenal and a day after the news of a possible contract offer was broken, he has been pictured in training.
The Arsenal social team, very aware of the situation, put out a tactical tweet of the Swiss man. ‘Welcome back, Granit,’ read the caption.

Could he be here to stay much longer than expected?
Chris Wheatley explained that things have changed greatly and it was simply a lack of Roma’s willingness to increase their offer that’s scuppered the deal.
Xhaka had agreed a five year deal in principle with Roma.
