Thomas Tuchel to follow up Champions League win with bumper window

Tuchel set to demand high spending

Despite being the new Champions of Europe, Thomas Tuchel is not happy to sit on his laurels as he seeks further glory next season.

His 1-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, keeping his 100% record over the Spanish boss in the process, saw Chelsea win their second ever Champions League trophy thanks to a first-half Kai Havertz goal.

However, a recent article by the Times suggests that Chelsea have intentions to spend significant amounts of money this summer. This would add to their £220 million outlay in the summer of 2020, which included moves for Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

Three key positions to improve:

Tuchel is thought to be chasing a centre-back, central midfielder and a striker, whilst cover at full-back for the ageing Cesar Azpilicueta is also thought to be on their minds.

The Blues have been strongly linked with moves for ex-Chelsea players Declan Rice and Romelu Lukaku, both of whom would cost upwards of £50 million each. If Rice proves unattainable, Jonas Hofmann of Borussia Monchengladbach is thought to also be in the picture, and would likely cost far less than the West Ham midfielder.

At centre back, Maxence Lacroix, who has enjoyed a strong season in the Bundesliga with Wolfsberg, is allegedly one of the players that technical director Petr Cech is keeping tabs on.

Harry Kane is also an option at centre-forward but is thought to favour a move to Manchester City, who are reportedly keen on making a move for the Englishman.

When asked about his plans for the Summer, Tuchel played down transfer talk, saying that:

“We don’t need another seven and another complete turnover,  because it’s also our job to keep on improving as we have still a young squad and it’s now about [giving] them the chance to prove it again that they are capable of growing and evolving. But we have some ideas, of course, to make the group stronger and this can always be a positive thing to challenge all of us.”

Tuchel and Silva set to be rewarded with new contracts:

Meanwhile, Tuchel is set to move to extend Thiago Silva’s contract for a further twelve months, with the 36-year-old having impressed for Chelsea in the middle of a back three since his move from PSG in Summer 2020.

Tuchel himself is also in line for an extension to his current deal, with a contract until 2023 rumoured to be in the pipeline, which may include an option for a further year.

It has certainly been a massively successful start to Thomas Tuchel’s career at Chelsea, and with the talent at his disposal as well as the rumoured deals that the club are seeking, they could well challenge on all fronts next season.
