Dominik Szoboszlai

Age 20. DOB: 25 October 2020.

Teams: Hungary & RB Leipzig

Position: Central midfielder.

Imagine being a national hero at the age of just 20.

The date is 12 November 2020 and it’s the night that Dominik Szoboszlai would write his name into Hungarian football history.

Hungary are welcoming Iceland to Puskás Aréna in the UEFA Euro 2020 Path A play-off Final with the winner qualifying for the tournament itself.

Iceland lead after just 11 minutes through a Sigurðsson free-kick and retain that lead for, almost, the rest of the match.

That is until Loïc Négo scrambled home an 89th minute equaliser which had seemingly forced extra time.

However, with the Icelandics pushing for a winner, Dominik Szoboszlai picks up the ball, goes on a mazy, solo run and smashes the ball into the bottom corner.

A dramatic 92nd minute winner to send Hungary to the Euros.

At that point, Szoboszlai was on top of the world but things haven’t gone to plan since.

He joined RB Leipzig from RB Salzburg in January but is yet to make his debut for the German club due to an adductor injury.

Despite this, he has been named in Marco Rossi’s provisional squad for Euro 2020; it remains to be seen if he makes the cut.

Hungary are in Group F alongside France, Portugal and Germany so could desperately do with Szoboszlai as they prepare to take on three of the giants of the international game.
