Ryan Mason claims Tottenham don’t need Champions League football to keep Harry Kane

Tottenham vs Sheffield United

Sunday’s Premier League action will draw to a close in north London when Tottenham take on Sheffield United.

The tie of course means very little to a Sheffield United side who have already been relegated from the English top-flight.

However, the game is still of huge importance to Spurs. Following their League Cup final defeat vs Manchester City, the Lilywhites’ only hope of securing European football next term will come via their league finish.

At present, though, Tottenham remain outside of the top-six. They are, however, only one point off Liverpool who sit six and five points off 4th.

Ryan Mason on Kane & team news

Ahead of Sunday evening’s must-win game, interim boss Ryan Mason spoke to the media on Friday.

When doing so, Mason would discuss a number of topics, including Harry Kane, who earlier this week cast doubt over his future when he stated his goal is to win team trophies, something Spurs obviously have not done since 2008:

“When I look back at the end of my career, these are all the things I’ll go over and take in a little bit more, but the goal right now as a player is to win team trophies,” he said.

“As much as this is great, I want to be winning the biggest team prizes. We’re not quite doing that. It’s bittersweet, but it is what it is. I’m proud to win [Premier League Player of the Year], it’s been a good season on the pitch.”

But when asked whether Spurs need Champions League football to keep Kane, Mason stated:

“I don’t think so. Harry Kane loves this football club, in the past eight or nine years as one of the best strikers in the world. Everyone knows that and we know that and hopefully Harry knows that.”

Mason would also provide a Tottenham team news update in his presser, confirming that Ben Davies is the only issue:

“Same as last week, just Ben Davies out now.”
