UEFA reveal substitute regulations for Euro 2020 and the 2021 Nations League

5 subs for the Euros

UEFA has announced that the teams competing at the 2020 European Championships and the subsequent 2021 Nations League Finals will be able to use 5 substitutions during the tournament per match.

Currently, most leagues around Europe are able to use 5 substitutes in their matches. Whereas the Premier League is one of the only top leagues that currently is not allowing teams to conduct the additional changes.

Earlier on in the season, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp criticised Premier League clubs for voting against the use of 5 substitutes in the Premier League. The German coach believed it was better for player welfare despite claims that it benefitted the bigger clubs such as The Reds.

“Everybody knows my opinions about it,” Klopp said. “Everyone knows 10 clubs voted against it. It was not about advantages, it was only about player welfare. And they voted against it.

“Pretty much only they voted against them in the whole world.

“I don’t know which other leagues only have three subs. There must be a good reason for it, for all these leagues and clubs to vote for it.”

Fans at Euros

The Culture secretary Oliver Dowden has announced that there is hope a significant number of fans will be able to attend Euro 2020 matches at Wembley stadium in the summer.

As the vaccination program rolls out over England, the hope that a return to a form of ‘normal life’ could return soon with all Government restrictions on social laws set to end on June 21st.

Dowden said that more than 10,000 fans could be seen in the ground.

“For the later matches in the tournament, we’ll be looking at substantially more than [10,000], but that is subject to finding a safe way of doing that. I’m very hopeful and optimistic that we will get many, many more people in for the later stage games,” he said.

He said that it will be dependent on everyone follows the rules as the country gradually eases the lockdown.

“This is why it’s important people abide by the rules as we go through each stage of this. The reason why we’ve been able to do what we’re seeing today is because people have by and large stuck to the rules so far. It’s important that at each stage people stick to the rules.”
